Arusha national park is the closet park from Arusha town. Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, often overlooked by safarigoers, despite offering the opportunity to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a few hours.

Arusha national park is a hidden gem among the national parks of the country. It hosts a surprisingly varied landscape which is dominated by the giant horse shoe shaped crater of Mt Meru

In clear morning hours you can see the snow-capped Kilimanjaro. But it is not Kilimanjaro which dominates this park’s horizon, Mt Meru standing at 4566 m, it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and also the fifth highest mountain in Africa.

The rewarding climb to the summit takes you through grassland and lush forest, where you’re likely to spot wildlife, and onto the knife-edge crater rim. Stunning sights into the crater, and breathtaking views across to the majestic Kilimanjaro make this an incredible climbing experience.

Location

National park of Arusha is located on the northeast of Arusha town. Easy 40-minute drive northeast from Arusha and approximately 60 km (1 hour) from Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Size: 552 sq km 212 sq miles.

When to go

  • To climb Mt Meru, June-February although it may rain in November.
  • December to February – offers the best views of Kilimanjaro.
  • March to June and October to December – the rainy seasons.

Activities

  • Forest walks, numerous picnic sites
  • Enjoy walking safaris, game drives and canoeing in the Momella Lakes. Climbing Mt Meru takes 4 days and is a great preparation for climbing Kilimanjaro.
